A hydrofoil is like an underwater wing that lifts your board above the surface as you gain speed. The result? A smooth, fast, and almost friction-free ride that feels like you’re flying across the water.

There are hydrofoils for kitesurfing, winging, SUP/downwind, prone surf, and wake — each designed with specific lift and speed characteristics. The right one depends on how you ride and what you want to do on the water.

You’ll need a foil setup (mast, fuselage, front and rear wings), a compatible board with foil tracks or mounts, and some basic safety gear like a helmet, impact vest and leash. Many brands now offer modular systems that make upgrading or switching disciplines easier later on.

Every foil has four main components:

Mast – The long vertical section that connects the board to the foil.

Fuselage – The central link between front and rear wings.

Front Wing – generates lift and determines speed.

Rear Wing (stabiliser) – provides balance and pitch control.

No, most brands use unique mounting systems. Many use modular connections so you can mix wings, masts or fuselages within the same brand range as you progress to give more performance.

Most people get their first “lift” within a few sessions, and start riding comfortably in 5–10 sessions, depending on your background and how often you get out.
