Foil Rear Wings

The rear wing — or stabiliser — balances the lift created by your front wing. It controls pitch (nose up and down), adds yaw stability for straight flight, and fine-tunes how your foil turns and pumps. You can tune your foil by changing the rear wing.

Larger rear wings: add stability, smoother pitch control and easier take-off — great for beginners and slower foils.

Smaller rear wings: reduce drag and increase speed, giving a looser, more agile feel once you’re comfortable on foil.

Swapping rear wings can completely change how your foil feels. A smaller or lower-drag rear wing will make it livelier and faster; a bigger rear wing adds grip and makes it more forgiving. Many riders keep two or three stabilisers to match conditions.

No. Most foils are designed to work straight out of the box. Shims allow for some fine tuning by changing the angle of attack of the rear wing. Not something to worry about when learning but you can change the angle of the rear wing to increase/decrease lift, speed and drag.

Too big: foil feels slow, hard to accelerate, nose wants to lift.

Too small: foil feels twitchy and hard to control pitch.
If you’re constantly fighting the nose up/down, it’s time to fine-tune your tail size or shims.

Some brands have built their rear wing into their fuselage in a complete carbon construction. This tends to be more efficient as there are less drag areas from screws and joins. There is no measurable effect of a monobloc tail but it does tend to allow you to ride a smaller rear wing as their is a small increase in speed.
