Duotone Float 2025: The Ultimate Wave and Downwind Wing – Behind the Design

What’s the Concept Behind the Float?

The Duotone Float is a completely new addition to the Duotone wing range, created with a strong focus on wave and downwind performance. While the popular Unit wing evolved into an all-rounder, the Float was developed to prioritise pure surfing and gliding.

According to Duotone Wing Designer Ken Winner:

“The Float was designed to bring wave and downwind performance back into focus. We worked closely with our top wave riders, Jeffrey and Finn Spencer, who have extensive experience riding in Maui’s world-class conditions. Their input was instrumental in refining the drift, stability, and precise control needed for seamless carving and effortless downwind runs.”

The Float features our innovative wave-optimized canopy design, exceptional drift stability, and size-specific power distribution, taking your wave-riding experience to the next level. Get ready to elevate your sessions with unmatched control and performance in every wave!

How is the Float Tailored for Wave Riding?

A dedicated wave wing needs to be responsive, balanced, and intuitive to handle, especially when flagged out on a wave. The Float is packed with specific design features to enhance wave riding:

  • Low sweep angle in the leading edge – Improves luff stability, allowing the wing to drift naturally when flagged out.
  • Moderate dihedral – Provides a balance between stability and responsiveness, making it ideal for aggressive turns or relaxed down-the-line surfing.
  • Light front canopy tension – Enhances roll control, making micro-adjustments mid-ride effortless.
  • Wide, stiff leading-edge handle – Ensures precise control, allowing the rider’s input to translate into instant response.
  • Neutral lift while luffing – Contributes to fluid turns and seamless transitions, reducing drag and maintaining speed without unwanted lift.
  • Lightweight construction – Eliminates unnecessary materials such as windows, reducing overall weight and enhancing drift for effortless handling.

The Float 2025 introduces our weight-optimized original construction, significantly reducing overall mass while maintaining durability. This featherlight design offers effortless handling in the surf, enabling quick, responsive manoeuvres that keep you in perfect harmony with the waves.

Pro rider Wesley Brito sums it up best:

“The Float 2025 is a wave rider’s dream – light, responsive, and incredibly stable. Its drift performance and precise control make carving waves effortless, while the boom option elevates handling to the next level. Perfect for surf and downwind sessions!”

Boom Setup

The Float is available exclusively with the Fusion Boom, a design that keeps weight minimal while enhancing handling precision. This setup ensures intuitive control, making it an excellent choice for both seasoned downwind riders and those newer to wave riding.

For the ultimate lightweight wave riding experience, the Float is available as a boom-only option, minimising weight for effortless manoeuvrability. When paired with the Fusion Carbon boom, this wing offers unmatched handling, making it the perfect tool for carving through the waves with ease and precision.

Who is the Float For?

The Float is ideal for wave and downwind enthusiasts who prioritise glide, stability, and smooth transitions. While it doesn’t match the speed of the Unit or cater to freestyle tricks, it excels in fluidity, drift, and balance.

  • Best for: Riders who want a wing that stays controlled and predictable when flagged out, allowing them to focus on carving waves or cruising downwind.
  • Great for beginners? Yes! The Float’s balanced handling and intuitive feel also make it an excellent choice for those learning the fundamentals of wing foiling and great for those with wave and downwinding aspirations.

Durability vs. Weight: Striking the Right Balance

One of the biggest challenges in wing design is balancing durability with weight. According to Ken Winner:

“Our goal was to make the Float as light as possible without relying on exotic or costly materials. We used trusted Dacron and ripstop fabrics, but removed heavier Dacron from the centre of the leading edge. Instead, we increased the diameter slightly to maintain stiffness. Additionally, we eliminated the windows, as their material adds unnecessary weight. Since wave wings are mostly luffed, windows provide no real benefit.”

We’ve also increased the tube diameter to enhance wing stiffness at the centre, offering greater control in demanding wave conditions.

The Canopy Tension Approach

Ken also shared insights into the Float’s unique canopy tension setup:

“High canopy tension improves speed and stability when sheeted in, but it can reduce stability when luffing. We took full advantage of this while developing the Float. The front canopy tension is intentionally low, allowing it to luff freely, creating drag and stability when sheeted out. However, we maintained strong leech tension for solid pumpability and power.

The canopy tension also varies by size – larger Floats have more front tension to keep the draft from shifting in gusts, while smaller sizes have significantly less front tension. This results in **excellent low-end power, a broad angle-of-attack sweet spot, and a surprisingly forgiving feel.”

Pro rider Finn Spencer adds:

“The Float 2025 is an absolute game-changer for wave riding! Its exceptional drift and featherlight handling make it effortless to stay in sync with the wave, allowing for smooth, flowing turns.”

Final Thoughts

The Duotone Float is a specialised wing for wave and downwind riders looking for exceptional drift, seamless transitions, and intuitive handling. If you prioritise fluidity and effortless gliding over sheer power, the Float is the perfect companion for your sessions. Whether you’re carving through waves or embarking on long downwind runs, this new release from Duotone is set to redefine performance in the surf.

Available in sizes from 2.5 to 5.5m², the Float 2025 is the ultimate choice for wave riders seeking the perfect blend of performance, stability, and control.
