It remains the right choice for many riders, and if you are new to any of the sports it is the ideal place to start. SLS construction provides a clear performance upgrade, with reduced weight and increased speed and responsiveness. This results in more reactive handling, improved efficiency and a more direct feel. It suits riders who are confident in their riding and want equipment that responds faster and delivers higher performance across a wider range of conditions.

D/LAB construction delivers maximum performance through the lightest and most advanced construction available. This is the highest level of performance Duotone produces, and it is what many of their team riders use when competing at the highest levels. These riders demonstrate what is possible with the most advanced equipment, but it also raises an important question — do you need the highest-end construction if you are not pushing performance to its limits?

If you are still learning the basics and regularly crashing, Original construction is the right choice. It is designed to handle the demands of progression while remaining stable, predictable and durable. As your riding improves and you begin riding more confidently in a wider range of conditions, upgrading construction becomes more relevant.

Most riders upgrade gradually, often starting with the piece of equipment they use the most or where performance gains will be most noticeable. In kitesurfing, this could be the board or your most-used kite size. In foiling, it may be the board, mast or front wing. In winging, upgrading to lighter construction can improve efficiency, especially in lighter wind conditions.

Upgrading construction should be driven by the performance you want to improve. For many riders, SLS represents the ideal balance. It offers a clear and noticeable performance increase over Original construction, while remaining practical and usable in everyday conditions.

D/LAB delivers the highest performance available, but performance gains at this level are most fully realised by riders with the skill and experience to utilise it. Team riders such as Andrea Principi or the Spencer Brothers are able to push the limits of what is possible, but their ability comes from both skill and equipment. The equipment enables that level of performance, but it does not replace the skill required to reach it.
