There is no right answer but shorter (<75cm) is definitely easier for learning as it reduces the chance of big crashes. Going big (> 85cm) gives more time between the foiling coming out of the water and board touching down. For most people once they are foiling comfortably around 80 – 85cm is the happy medium.

This will vary completely on your budget and can be something you upgrade in the future. Aluminium is the more budget friendly option that will not hold you back. Carbon is the more expensive option that is light, stiffer and stronger so will give more performance and efficiency especially with wider higher aspect foils as they have more leverage.

“High modulus” refers to the stiffness of the carbon fibre used in your mast. High modulus carbon has tighter fibre structure and higher tensile strength, which means it bends less under load and transfers power more efficiently from your feet to the foil.

If you’re an intermediate or advanced foiler who wants maximum performance — absolutely. You’ll feel the difference in control, glide and acceleration. Beginners will still notice a smoother, lighter ride, but the benefits really shine once you’re confident on foil.

As the mast is stronger it can be made thinner without any more flexability. The reduced flex means less energy wasted. The thinner construction is faster and more effcient through the water. So you can maintain flight longer and link bumps more efficiently. It’s one of the biggest upgrades for all foiling activities.

No — only specific models use high modulus fibres. Many standard carbon masts are built with mid-modulus carbon or carbon-glass mixes. Always check the specs — if it doesn’t say High Modulus (HM), it’s likely standard carbon.
