As a guide, beginners should choose a board with 20–30 litres more volume than their body weight in kilograms. As you progress, you can reduce the volume closer to your body weight to gain more control and responsiveness.
Beginner wing boards are longer, wider and thicker to provide easier balance and early lift. Advanced boards are shorter and narrower, making them lighter and more agile for carving and jumping in waves.
Most foil boards use twin US foil tracks, which give you a wide range of adjustment. Check that the track length is suitable, as longer tracks allow more tuning. Also ensure the board has good reinforcement around the box area. Some older and race-specific boards use a single tuttle box instead.
Most kite foil boards range from 90–130 cm. Shorter boards feel more agile, while longer boards are more forgiving and make strap starts easier. For most beginners, a board around 115–130 cm works well.
Pump foil boards are compact, stiff and lightweight to maximise efficiency when pumping. They are usually under 4’0” with low volume to keep swing weight down.
Downwind foil boards are longer to create glide and easy acceleration, while the narrow width (around 17–19 inches) reduces drag and improves paddling efficiency.
Some boards work well across different foil sports, but it depends on ability and size. A smaller wing board can cross over into prone, kite and pump foiling. Large beginner wing boards usually feel too bulky for other disciplines.
For prone foiling, start with a board around 35–45 litres for more paddle stability. As your skill improves, you can drop to 25–35 litres for a more responsive, lightweight feel when flying.
