The Student Kitesurfing Association’s (SKA) Wave Jam, which took place at Rest Bay, Porthcawl on 5 - 6th February 2011 was a huge success. With over 75 students from universities across the country, this was the best attended event to date for the newly formed SKA.

Alex Parker, president of the SKA said, “Kitesurfing is one of the fastest growing watersports and our aim at the SKA is to get as many students involved in kitesurfing as possible. The SKA caters for riders of all abilities and the committee have put a lot of hard work into organising events, from beginner’s clinics to inter-university competitions and are now seeing the benefits of this. The student kitesurfing community is growing and we are getting enquiries on a daily basis from students wanting to know how they can get involved or how they can set up a kite club at their university.

We are lucky to have some very experienced riders amongst the SKA committee and our student kitesurfers, such as pro rider Ali Barrett from Solent University who has competed internationally in the Professional Kitesurfing Championships and in the British Kitesurfing Championships, British Championship competitors, Pippa Grundy & Gemma Brill from Plymouth University, Ali Bevan from Edinburgh University, Harry Allerston from Soton University and Ali Reader, together with Zac Andrews from Soton University, all of whom encourage and inspire those students who are just learning to kitesurfer or who are at an intermediate stage.”

On Saturday winds reached up to 35 miles per hour at Rest Bay, one of the gustiest days in Porthcawl for some time. Whilst these conditions proved too challenging for some, the more experienced riders took to the waters, chasing the waves in the onshore wind. The drop in wind to 25 miles per hour on Sunday brought with it an array of kites in the air as more riders took to the water. The heats over and the 12 finalists battled it out to win points for their university in this second stop in the three part SKA 2010-2011National Tour competition series. With the final event set to take place in March at the Student Kitesurfing Nationals everything was at stake.

As the waves crashed on the shore in the incoming tide, there was tremendous riding from the 12 finalists, Matt Desmond (Soton),Harry Gregory (Bristol), Zac Andrews (Soton), Manuel Paiva (Solent), Romain Szyjan (Soton), Ali Barrett (Solent), Harry Allerston (Soton), Andrey Manirko (Bristol), Leah McHardy, Ben Gillespie (Soton), Tim Harley (Cambridge) and Jon Cook (Soton) in the half hour final.

Riding either strapped or strapless there was some technical riding on the inside from some riders, whilst others fought to get out back to find the cleaner waves; a winning move for Zac Andrews (Soton) who took first place in the strapped category and Jon Cook (Soton) who took first place in the strapless category.

Alex Parker said, “This has been a fantastic event, due entirely to the hard work and support of a lot of people without whom it simply would not have been possible. I would like to thank Bridgend Borough Council for allowing us to stage the event, the SKA committee for organising the event, Cardiff University for hosting it, Rest Bay Lifeguards and Cardiff University Kitesurfers for all their help and support over the weekend, the staff at Malc’s Café and all our sponsors; Flexifoil, Mystic, King of Watersports, ExPix, Ignite Beanies, South Wales Kitesurfing and of course the Red Bull team.”
