ROYAL MARINES V ROYAL NAVY CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

The weekend of 03-05 Jun 11 saw the second RN v RM Kitesurfing Championships held at Portland. The weather was favorable with strong winds and bright sunshine. Unfortunately due to Operational commitments many of the Association members could not attend however the turnout was still good. The competition was run as a freestyle event and was open to all levels of riders. The standard had risen defiantly from last year with some big moves being thrown from Back loop kite loops to Unhooked S-bends. The Navy were confident they would retain the trophy however they hadn’t banked on the dedication of the RM team who had worked tirelessly (especially during the Kite Camp in Egypt) to improve their riding ability. The competition was closely fought but the RM team came to the fore as the overall victors. First place was taken by Lt Col Tony Chattin RM Second place went to the Navy’s Lt James Goddard and third was taken by Capt Scully Scullion RM. The Trophy was awarded to the RM team by the Associations new President of the RNRM Kitesurfing Association, DCINC – Vice Admiral George Zambellas.

The event was greatly enhanced through the generous support from a couple of our main supporting companies. Our thanks must go to King of Watersports who donated prizes and organized plenty of demo kit, including F-One Kites, Xtremes Academy for assistance with Instruction and kit support and also for the donation to the association Bar-b-que, and finally to Weymouth Watersports who provided the location and even more demo kit to play with. Also special thanks to Flexifoil who provided Robin Snuggs (a Flexifoil Pro rider) to act as an impartial judge for the event. Also thanks to Mike Smith for his expertees on the judging panel.
