King of Watersports NEW Kitesurf Team Rider | Charlie Davies

Hi! I’m Charlie, I’m 24 and I’m a doctor in the RAF. I’ve been kiting for 2 and a half years now and I’ve been riding LF kit for 2 years. Right now, I’m riding the LF Hifi Comps (7,9,11) with the LF recoil, occasionally with my very pretty LF Amber Wing bindings.

My favourite style of riding is freestyle but I love a bit of wakestyle too. I love the LF gear because it‘s super good quality, high spec and looks awesome! I’ve really put my kites through some tough conditions, especially in the UK and since I’ve started learning some new stuff they’re constantly hitting the water but this doesn’t seem to impact the condition and they have remained amazingly reliable since the day I got them

I started kiting at uni and learned with SUKS (Southampton uni club). When I left, I carried on in the student scene as I became the chick rep for the SKA (student kite surfing association). In the last year, we’ve held two chick clinics. They’ve been great fun to host and have helped more than 60 girls progress from beginner to pros on the water.

I also ride with the guys and gals from the RAF. They’re awesome fun and always up for trying new tricks and pushing their riding to the next level. Last year, we kited across the British channel; 82 miles from Alderney to Poole harbour - it was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done! We also recently had a coaching trip to Gokova Bay with the Always Windy team. With it being always windy, we spent all day every day on the water learning new tricks and perfecting the old ones. Kiting in the RAF is still quite new and there aren’t many girls who ride yet but I’m hoping to help increase exposure to kiting and encourage more girls into the sport.  With both the SKA and the RPKA, I’m really keen to encourage more chicks into kiting and to motivate those already riding to push themselves a bit further.

This year, I started competing in the amateur section of the BKSA and it’s been amazing fun. I really enjoy competing. A little bit of pressure makes my riding improve a lot quicker and makes me more motivated to go kiting when it’s freezing cold and rainy in the UK! All the girls on the tour are really enthusiastic and great fun, watching the pros certainly gets me motivated for my heats.

Travelling to kite spots across the world over the last couple of years has been a fantastic experience. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to so many exciting places including Oman, Dakhla, Turkey and Cyprus and have been snow kiting in Norway and Switzerland too. However I cannot forget that, despite being chilly, most of my kiting has been here in the UK! Most weekends, you’ll find me kiting at different corners of the country though Scotland is probably my favourite. It’s full of butter flat fresh water lochs and a constant 25 knot wind! Yummy! My local spot, Hunstanton is also amazing. The lagoons at low tide are the home of new tricks and where I have made most of my progress in the last year

Right now I’m still working full time but next year I’ll be taking a career break from the RAF in order to focus on my kiting a bit more. I want to continue to find new kite spots and continue to compete for the RAF and on the BKSA tour. I’m hoping to catch some of the PKRA events on my travels too.
